Voyager to build new 38,000 sq. ft. High School

Dear Voyager Academy Families,

We have very exciting news regarding the location of Voyager Academy High School.  In a turn of events very similar to those in April of 2007 when we had to change buildings due to unforeseen challenges with the space, we have been presented with an opportunity from Hock Development. This opportunity will benefit Voyager Academy High School and its students tremendously for many years to come.  The Board of Directors has approved the terms and entered into an agreement as follows:

•  Hock Development will build a brand new 38,000 sq. ft. high school on 5.8 acres of land with 250 parking spaces located adjacent to the current Voyager Academy Middle School.  The school will be built in the empty field behind the Hock Media Center and beside the Bonnie Brae house on Ben Franklin Blvd.

•  Construction is planned to begin in August 2010 on the new building. The projected completion date for the new high school building is August 2011.

•  During the 1 year construction period for the high school (the 2010-2011 school year) Voyager Academy High School 9th graders will occupy approximately 7,000 sq. ft. at Summit I, 3414 N. Duke Street, Durham, 27704, located at the corner of Duke St. and Fairfield St.

•  Hock Development will immediately begin up-fitting the Duke Street building for the 9th grade for one year, the 2010-2011 school year.

We know that it is a choice to attend Voyager Academy, and we appreciate everyone who believed in us and Hock Development during the first year of our current school.  We know we would not be where we are today without all the support and hard work of our families and community.  Now we look forward to this amazing opportunity once again – designing and building a new state of the art space for our high school.  We thank you for your continued support as we make this facility change for the High School.  We believe it is in the best interest of each student who currently attends and will attend Voyager Academy in the years to come.
